Cite 5 real-life situations that exhibit the Power of Media through various purposes such as sharing of information

Media is considered as one of the most powerful tools in providing information to people or in society. Media is part of our daily lives. It informs, influences, and entertains us. Not only they inform us, they have also the capability in shaping our lives. Advertisements shown on television or even in the internet can affect the viewers. Some contains violence, nudity or anything that is inappropriate to the viewers who are children or under age. They might think the information on that certain advertisement is correct without proper guidance from the parents. In the internet, there is no censorship when it comes to information resulting to some users to take this as an advantage to spread false information all over the web. That is the reason that there are some users who were victimized by scammers, bullies and etc. Medias has biases also. They have the power to manipulate thus making viewers to believe on the information they insinuate. But all of those negativities written above can be abide. Parents must be vigilant on what their children are watching. They must ensure that it is age appropriate. Users in the internet must check the authenticity of the information. They must check the origin of it to avoid fallacy. Never post something too personal like bank numbers, address or any that might put you in jeopardy. Always consider one’s privacy. In detecting biases in media, look for the sources if it involves political perspectives. Check if the headline and actual article matches. Sometimes it contains double standards. Look who’s point of view is the article is written and find alternate point of views . Biased information tries to change your mind so as an individual we must not believe immediately. Our main source of to get information is the media. Without media, we will never be updated on the day-today events that is happening in our surrounding. Media is used to raise awareness but sometimes they use it for biases. In using the media, we must follow some rules and etiquettes. Information is powerful but we must not abuse it. We must turn ourselves as responsible users. Media has two sides, the positive and the negative. It can help us but it has the capability to destroy us. But it all depends on us. If we let them continue to do those negative things, we are only letting them play our lives. But if we become vigilant, we can truly avoid or stop those things. Responsibility is a big word. But it is one the things that are inevitable. Every individual plays a role in the society and a responsibility to take. There is one saying that serves as a reminder, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Write three-paragraph essay describing your virtual self

I learned from the activity that we are held responsible for our actions when we use the internet and that we must be aware of the consequences that our actions must face. I have learned in this course that parameters, protections, and awareness of legal matters are just as much as important if not more so as understanding how to use the technology itself. Part of being a digital citizen is understanding that it is really no different than being a citizen. We should feel a responsibility to protect ourselves and others no matter the realm. Protections and a commitment to respectfully conduct oneself online must be in place along with a solid understanding of the technology being used. The idea that “anything will do” is not best practices. Technology isn’t merely a delivery method of information, but a tool that enhances students’ learning and helps them develop their creativity.

Take a picture of any subject. Indicate what camera shot you utilized and provide one paragraph interpretation/ explanation of the picture

The technical and symbolic codes contribute a lot to media and Information literacy. It helps the information to become more informative and these codes are very visible to an information. Code shows and givesinformation and ideas about a place, organization, etc. by simply showingsome symbolic pictures. It is important for a media information to have codes, so through that, the people will easily recognize what’s the
information mostly about. I’ve realized that there are many ways to convey good/badinformation about something and that is through showing or putting somesymbolic codes. It makes an information clear and understandable.

Media and Information Sources make it easier for us to locate our desired information. Sources are medium of knowledge that is past through the paper and to people. Infographic about Media Convergence

Convergence is the connection various things. When it comes to media, convergence is where computing, communication, and content come together to make the internet easier to access for people all over the world. It is also the evolution of technology. Some products were combined with one another to create something that would perform similar tasks. Media convergence is changing communication socially in many ways. For example, when cellphones were first created, sole purpose of it was to call people. Today in 2015, cellphones can now call and text people, surf internet, play games, and many other things. Also, video game consoles have changed drastically. From Nintendo 64 to XBox One and Playstation 4 (PS4), there are big changes. On the XBox One and PS4, you can connect to the internet and play online. Without convergence, every thing would be its own product. The cellphone would just be able to call, and an iPod would just be able to listen to music. Convergence has made our everyday lives much easier. Instead of having seven different products, it is all condensed into one. In the professional world, convergence has made jobs easier. If you were to work for a big corporation, every thing you would need from the internet to spreadsheets are at your fingertips because of the laptop/desktop. A downside to convergence is that face-to-face communication is non-existent in today’s society. People are so busy looking at their screens that they don’t have in person conversations anymore. Everything is either done on your cellphone or computer. Convergence has shaped the world as we know today for the better.

Visual Presentation about Types of Media (with Blue and Yellow theme)

Media and Information sources is also discussed in this subject that helps widen our knowledge about the different types of sources. Modern media comes in many different formats, including print media (books, magazines, newspapers), television, movies, video etc. Being a media user has a lot of responsibility in social media, we have this new kind of way to communicate with. Media literacy is the ability to identify different types of media and understand the messages they’re sending. The digital age has made it easy for anyone to create media. We don’t always know who created something, why they made it, and whether it’s credible. This makes media literacy tricky to learn and teach.

The evolution of media, from old media to new media, has transformed the way we understand the world around us. A. Activity 1

Choose one topic among the following issues and write a three- paragraph essay incorporating the essence of Media and Information Literacy.

As a student and a media and information literate I have learned many ways during the lessons about the different topics. In digital era we communicate in terms of technology and we uses smartphone in our daily lives. Example of this FB, Twitter, Instagram and more. The information coming from the media help me as a student and to be more literate in spreading information which should be accurate and verifiable. As we know that Media and Information Literacy depend on information to work optimally. The quality of information we engage with largely determines our perceptions, beliefs and attitudes. It could be information from other persons, the media, libraries, archives, or other information providers including those on the Internet. People across the world are witnessing a dramatic increase in access to information and communication. While some people are starved for information, others are flooded with print, broadcast and digital content. Media and Information Literacy provides answers to the questions that we all ask ourselves at some point. It becomes an important tool in modern communication and the digital age has made it easy for anyone to create media. We don’t always know who created something, why they made it, and whether it’s credible. This makes media literacy tricky to learn and teach. Nonetheless, media literacy is an essential skill in the digital age. I have also learned that Posting and sharing is a part of our daily routine. We have the right of every individual to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers especially when it’s all about our ideal. Being a media user has a lot of responsibility in social media, we have this new kind of way to communicate with people that’s very immediate, sometimes alarmingly so, sometimes painfully so. If we could just hold some objectivity, a very direct, unfiltered, raw reflection of the way something is landing in the culture without any spin, or filtration, or anything, it’s very raw. We need to be more careful in posting links, pages or even personal status so we can prevent distortion.
Lastly, we should cherish our knowledge because it is a source of learning. But unless it is organized, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making, it is a burden, not a benefit.
